Species: Giant Runt Pigeon (Age 1)
Location: NYC Metro Area
Pigeon Heart Disease Diagnosis (CT & Echocardiogram) for NYC Patient at Long Island Bird & Exotics Veterinary Clinic
Pigeons are often overlooked as pets, but they are very affectionate and intelligent. The Giant Runt Pigeon, a young 1-year-old female patient, came to us after sudden weight loss and regurgitation. The case underscores the advanced cardiac capabilities we offer at Long Island Bird & Exotics Veterinary Clinic.
The Patient: An Abnormal Rhythm
During the physical exam, Dr. Lee noted an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia). The Giant Runt Pigeon was underweight and had a history of egg-laying, which can strain the body. We admitted the patient to our hospital for stabilization with fluids and assisted feeding.
The Diagnosis: Advanced Cardiac Workup
To understand the arrhythmia, we utilized two powerful diagnostic tools:
CT Scan: Showed the heart was significantly enlarged (cardiomegaly) and revealed atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
Echocardiogram: Reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist, this confirmed Atrial Fibrillation and reduced blood flow to the right side of the heart.
The Treatment: Long-Term Management
Heart disease in birds cannot usually be "cured," but it can be managed.
Medication: We started the patient on a multi-drug protocol to support heart function and slow the disease progression.
Monitoring: The patient returns regularly for rechecks to adjust the meds.
Recovery
Thanks to the dedication of the family and our medical team, the Giant Runt Pigeon is currently doing well at home, maintaining a good quality of life despite the serious condition.
